About Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge was built to replace the Judith Bridge, badly damaged by floods in 1342; construction began in 1357 under Charles IV and was finished in 1402, and it has been called Charles Bridge since 1870. Built of sandstone blocks, it has a fortified tower at each end, and 30 statues of saints were added between 1683 and 1928, the most famous of them St John of Nepomuk, as Prague City Tourism records.
